Grant and Susan Johnson – Horizons Unlimited at India Bike Week

Adrenaline pumped, stomach full of gusto, yearning for adventure and constantly seeking for life to surprise them…sounds like a young, rugged, fiery couple? No. This is only a terribly small and unjust description of Susan and Grant Johnson, a 50 plus couple who have rubber tramped across the world for 14 years, over 50 countries, including Antarctica, on a 1986 BMW R80G/S. Susan still chuckles like a shy adolescent when Grant Johnson explains how they met and three years later from that first date, to the dismay of everyone they knew, they set off on a motorcycle to experience their planet hands on. Selling most of their belongings, Susan and Grant Johnson hit the roads in 1987 for their great odyssey. They made no rush to cover as much soil as possible. Instead Susan vouches for travelling slow and taking time to allow every place to touch you. “Stuff happens, life happens, serendipity happens so be flexible and prepared to change anything and everything, anytime.” says Susan. Circumnavigating around the globe they began understanding various concepts of travel on a larger, more philosophical level. For example, Grant claims, that within a few years they realized that ‘the borders were only in your head’ and that it was the attitude with which you approached various concepts during each sojourn that determined everything else. Today, Grant and Susan Johnson are the...

Deepak Kamath at MTM 15

This is the among the emotional talks we have heard on the MTM platform. At a time and age when the records were broken – Deepak and his mate Basavaraj set out across borders to set the fastest circumnavigation record around the globe on a motorcycle. Kitted up with the best available motorcycle then, Yezdi Roadking and support from the company, they achieved setting the Limca Book world record. A humble kind hearted soul who lives a simple day-to-day is a quiet inspiration to many of us. What mattered, in the end, was not the World Record but the adventure of seeking and crossing borders. Listen to this illustrious life – many records were set on cycles, K2K record, and the world record. The story was lost in time when Deepak went underground to live a regular life. We are happy to have found him and the opportunity to document/archive...

Haroon Rafiq at MTM 15

Farzana and Haroon Rafiq, a humble couple, settled in Bangalore, are not your quintessential ride-around-world couple. After a decade of pondering over the idea and persuading his wife to accompany him…today their only question is “Where next?” They took their first big step when they bought two tickets to Germany and sent their children off to their grandparent’s house. Their first ride was along the European Alps on a rented, brand new, light blue-grey, BMW R1200RT. Covering 300kms that first day, in Munich they knew that this was just the beginning of totally new phase in life. Today, Haroon Rafiq and Dr.Zainaba Farzana hold a national record in the Limca Book of Records for being the first Indian couple to ride over six continents (America, Africa, Europe, Columbia, India and New Zealand) on BMW motorcycles, doing a 7-9 day ride across 2-4 countries in each...
